The Barberton Innovative Artist Society

Based in the Makhonjwa Mountains of Mpumalanga, BArts restores material independence to practicing artists through hands-on education in elemental, earth-sourced mediums.

Our Mandate

Create · Uplift · Renew

We teach artists to forage, grind, pulp, and construct their own physical mediums directly from the land, ensuring regional creative self-reliance.

Geological Heritage

Drawn from the oldest earth

The Makhonjwa range exposes some of the oldest, best-preserved geological formations on Earth. Here, ancient strata offer rich reserves of raw clay, iron-rich ochres, and fibrous plant materials.

By moving away from manufactured commercial supplies, retreat operations directly fund local skills training and material access for the Barberton creative community.
